COLUMBUS, Ind. — Rollins Construction Company has been selected by Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, Ind. to construct a 2,400 foot floodwall to protect the entire medical campus from flooding. In June 2008, the basement and first floor of the hospital were flooded from nearby Haw Creek, forcing the hospital to be evacuated and closed for five months. The hospital reopened by the end of 2008, and was recently named to the 2011 Most Beautiful Hospitals in America list by Soliant Health.

The $4.7-million floodwall project will feature a brick and limestone wall surface designed to aesthetically match the existing hospital building’s facade. The back of house part of the floodwall will be finished in colored concrete. The project will include 15 passive flood gates at the pedestrian and vehicle entry points to protect the facility against a reoccurrence of flooding. FEMA is requiring and funding the project.

The hospital was designed by architect and current Dean of the Yale School of Architecture, Robert A. M. Stern.

Rollins Construction will provide general contracting services for the project. It is scheduled for completion in November 2011. BSA LifeStructures of Indianapolis is the project’s architect.

Rollins Construction has 33 years of experience building healthcare-related projects in Indiana. The company is completing its largest project ever, the $93 million renovation and expansion of Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. It also recently completed the Community Health Network data center.

Founded by the Rollins family in 1977, Rollins Construction Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of S. M. Wilson & Co. S. M. Wilson acquired Rollins in October 2007. S. M. Wilson is a 90-year-old, full-service construction management, design/build and general contracting firm with headquarters in St. Louis. It is one of the largest general construction and construction management firms in the St. Louis area. The company posted $345 million in 2010 revenues, and ranks 149th in Engineering News-Record’s 2010 list of Top 400 commercial contractors nationwide.
