A project by Iowa State University design students has won the student category of the 2015 Healthcare Environment Awards. The awards honor healthcare interior architecture and design across a range of project types.

Winning students, left to right, Fang, Luo, Cho and Tiedman.
Winning students, left to right, Haoyu Fang, Yifan Luo, Youngyeon Cho and Casey Tiedman.

The students took first place for their conceptual design of a second patient tower at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The students developed the winning “UIHC Tower 2” proposal as their capstone project in the College of Design’s spring 2015 Health, Healing and Wellness interdisciplinary option studio.

A 12-story tower designed by Sir Norman Foster that will house the new children’s hospital is under construction on the UIHC campus. Students were tasked with designing a second tower that would complement the project and address complex site challenges. The winning design features a twisting form that enhances views from patient rooms, aids in circulation and creates a softened environment to aid in healing. The winning team was recognized Nov. 14-17 during the Healthcare Design Conference in Washington, D.C.
