ATLANTA — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded contracts to Heery International to help meet the renewable energy goals established by the National Energy Conservation Policy Act, which requires that at least 7.5 percent of the total amount of electric energy consumed by the federal government during fiscal year 2013 be renewable.

Heery’s assignment is to identify technical and economic solutions incorporating wind, solar, thermal, photovoltaic, geothermal and cogeneration at VA Medical Centers in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, West Virginia, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas and Arkansas.  The assignment stems from Heery’s successful completion of similar studies at 17 other VA sites throughout Georgia, Florida, California and Puerto Rico.

“We’re proud to play a role in the federal government’s efforts to create energy independence by expanding the use of renewable energy in their facilities,” notes Heery Project Engineer Chris Humphries.

“Currently, we’re weighing the costs versus benefits of installing large-scale ground source heat pump systems at facilities in Arkansas and Texas,” adds Heery Project Engineer Joshua Gillespie.  “It’s exciting to be able to look at these possibilities, especially given the diversity of building types and systems.”

Heery International is an 800-person architecture, interior design, engineering, program management and construction management firm with offices nationwide.  As an affiliated company of Parsons Brinckerhoff, one of the world’s leading professional services companies, Heery now operates as that firm’s U.S. buildings operating company.
