PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The PennFIRST team has been selected to design and plan a new patient pavilion for the University of Pennsylvania Health System. The team is comprised of architects HDR and Foster+Partners, engineers BR+A, as well as construction managers L.F. Driscoll and Balfour Beatty.

Penn Medicine’s newest facility will be delivered through an Integrated Project Delivery process, and will be one of the nation’s largest IPD healthcare projects. Together Penn Medicine and PennFIRST staff will work together in a shared “integration space” in Philadelphia to explore new ideas in design, construction and healthcare delivery all geared toward optimizing the patient experience and generating positive patient outcomes.

While still subject to internal governance approvals, the new patient pavilion is expected to be home to several hundred new private patient rooms, a comprehensive interventional and surgical platform, a new emergency department and related support services to be built on the site occupied by Penn Tower and its parking garage. Occupying a highly visible urban space on the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania campus, the new patient pavilion will link HUP with the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.
