The American Institute of Architects has published its latest AIA Materials Pledge by the Numbers report, highlighting advancements and innovations in healthier materials that are redefining industry standards and guiding future specifications.

AIA Materials Pledge By the Numbers (RY24) reveals that over 325 firms have signed on to the Materials Pledge, a clear indicator of the profession’s unified effort to prioritize sustainability. This commitment translated into tangible results, with 121 signatory firms reporting data from 419 projects that total more than 36 million gross square feet.

A key finding from this year’s data is the strong focus on health. When evaluating materials, firms most frequently reported considering human health, showcasing a conscious effort to design spaces that promote well-being. This reflects an industry-wide recognition that the materials architects choose have a direct impact on the people who inhabit the buildings they create.

The report also shows that 67% of reporting firms have integrated materials selection into a formal Sustainability Action Plan, embedding this practice into their core operations. Furthermore, 53% of these firms maintain materials libraries with sustainable criteria, empowering their teams to make informed decisions. This dedication is further underscored by the fact that 41% of reported projects were pursuing a building certification, linking material choices to verifiable performance outcomes. The most commonly reported product categories for sustainable specification were acoustical ceilings, resilient flooring and carpets.
