When a child falls ill family support is important, and it is especially so when an intensive care stay is part of their journey. As such, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit hosts patients and often one or more family members.

Adding to the complexity, PICU rooms must also support life-saving technologies and allow ample room for caregivers to move efficiently around the space. Because PICU rooms can house patients spanning infancy to early adulthood, there is no one design that will work for all.

To support Evidence-Based Design, The Center for Health Design has released a web-based, annotated diagram, focusing on the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Room. The interactive and visually engaging rendering can be accessed here.

“We are excited to launch a new interactive design diagram tool that focuses on special needs of PICU patients and their families.” said Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC, president and CEO, The Center for Health Design. “Family centered care has increasingly become important in recent years and we’re pleased to provide design strategies to support this philosophy.”
