The American Society for Health Care Engineering celebrates the extraordinary achievements by members to improve the health care physical environment with its annual member awards. Awardees were recognized during the 2025 Health Care Facilities Innovation Conference July 27-30 in Columbus, Ohio.

The Crystal Eagle Leadership Award, considered ASHE’s lifetime achievement award, is presented to Dave Lockhart, CHFM, CEM, CRL, FASHE, executive director for facilities operations and maintenance for Kaiser Permanente’s national shared service operations based in Oakland, California.

Lockhart’s record of distinguished leadership within ASHE includes serving as ASHE Advisory Board Region 9 Representative and as Sustainability Liaison for the California Society for Healthcare Engineering. Over the course of his 30-year tenure in facilities departments at Kaiser Permanente, Lockhart has championed reliability-centered asset management and energy performance practices for the system, spearheading partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program during its early years. Regarded as a leading subject matter expert for reliability-centered asset management practices for the broader health care facilities management field, Lockhart has authored or co-authored several notable publications on the subject including the ASHE Reliability-Centered Maintenance Guide and serves as the chair of the ASHE Reliability-Centered Maintenance Task Force.

ASHE President’s Award presented to Larry Newlands
The ASHE President’s Award, which is given at the discretion of the sitting ASHE president to an individual who goes above and beyond to optimize the health care physical environment, is presented to Larry Newlands, CEM, CEP, director of energy management for Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston.

Newlands’ three decades of experience in facilities management includes more than 15 years working in health care facilities, where he has consistently and enthusiastically advocated for building performance optimization. His efforts to benchmark building energy usage across Memorial Hermann Health System have enabled the system to reinvest millions in saved resources into patient care. As an active member of the Texas Association for Healthcare Facilities Management, Newlands has collaborated with other ASHE Chapters to share utility benchmarking and energy management strategies that have become best practice in the health care facilities field. One such initiative also gave rise to ASHE’s Energy to Care Chapter Challenge, which has now become a fixture of ASHE’s energy management programming.
