Driscoll Children’s Hospital Heart Center in Corpus Christi, Texas marked a historic milestone with the ribbon-cutting of its newly expanded facility, an $100-million investment. Over 50,000 square feet of dedicated cardiac care space was added, including two operating rooms, two advanced cardiac catheterization labs and a 35-bed cardiac intensive care unit.
Driscoll’s Heart Center treats a high percentage of complex congenital heart conditions and provides expert multidisciplinary care from a team of more than 40 specialists. The project team included Page and Fulton-Coastcon General Contractors.
The center’s design creates an integrated inpatient and diagnostic pediatric heart center on two floors of the recently completed North Pavilion. Working in tandem with the clinical team, the design team utilized augmented reality technology to assist in communicating design and planning concepts, allowing staff the ability to experience the new space before it was built. This approach also allowed the design team to make both large and small adjustments, ultimately improving functionality, safety and efficiency.
