Texas Children’s New Clinic Serves as Prototype for Future Behavioral Health Clinics

Texas Children’s Hospital’s new Intensive Outpatient Programs Behavioral Health Clinic, located in Bellaire, Texas, offers an intermediate option for patients not requiring a hospital admission, while also providing step-down care for patients after a hospital discharge. The project team included Perkins&Will and DPR Construction

This project type is unique for Texas Children’s Hospital. Spaces were created to address the specific needs of this patient group, while laying the groundwork for a prototype that can be used for similar clinics in the future. When planning and designing the space, flexibility, patient comfort and safety considerations were prioritized. Subtle design features also enhance the visitor and patient experience, such as increased openness of the visitor lounge and design elements to assist with wayfinding.

The therapy rooms offer a comfortable environment supporting social interaction, self-expression and a sense of security. The design takes subtle inspiration from the ripple effect, which highlights the impact of small actions driving large-scale progress — a common theory referenced in behavioral health practices. This concept is embodied in the project’s softened angles, nature-inspired finishes and organic curves.
