The second phase of UCI Health’s $1.3-billion medical complex project in Irvine, California, the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building, has opened its doors. It is one of 57 facilities in the country with the comprehensive rating from the National Cancer Institute — and the only one based in Orange County. More than 160 patients received care on opening day.
The five-story, 225,000-square-foot building is designed to provide everything a patient needs in an environmentally friendly building close to home. A one-stop shop for cancer care and outpatient surgery services, it gives patients immediate access to a multidisciplinary team of experts in their specific disease, as well as all diagnostic and support services, ideally coordinated in a single visit.
Key features of the facility include a women’s health center and an infusion center featuring more than 40 infusion bays, including many inside private rooms, offering beautiful views of the adjacent San Joaquin Marsh Reserve. Advanced surgical techniques offer the latest outpatient procedures, including prostate cancer treatment with same-day discharge. Convenient amenities for patients, visitors and staff include a retail pharmacy, laboratory and coffee shop. The project team included CO Architects, Hensel Phelps, Mazzetti GBA and CME Corp.
