On the other hand, soft, warm lighting can create a more inviting and calming environment. Studies have shown that such lighting can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, improve sleep quality and even enhance the healing process.

The emotional impact of lighting is profound. By carefully considering the lighting design in healthcare facilities, architects and designers can create spaces that promote healing and comfort.

At Wolfson Children’s Hospital located in Jacksonville, Florida, our team partnered with lighting designers to create a special moment upon arrival. The main lobby features a stunning glass sculpture, brilliantly highlighted by strategically placed multi-head recessed lights embedded within the walls. This approach not only disperses light uniformly, creating a seamless sparkle from every angle, but also contributes to a welcoming ambiance. The design demonstrates how integrating unconventional lighting solutions can significantly elevate the aesthetic and functional aspects of healthcare spaces.

Furthering this concept, another local medical facility in Jacksonville employs a sophisticated lighting scheme in its labor, delivery and recovery rooms that mirrors the warmth typically found in modern residential or hospitality settings. This layered lighting setup ensures that every necessary task is well-lit, while also maintaining a comforting atmosphere for patients. Such thoughtful lighting design is crucial in alleviating the clinical feel of medical facilities, making them more inviting and less daunting for patients during critical moments.

 

While the impact of lighting design on healthcare environments is profound, it is often undervalued in the design process. Architects and developers, in their quest for efficiency and functionality, may default to standard lighting practices that overlook the emotional and healing aspects of lighting. But by highlighting the opportunities that exist with lighting, we can inspire a new perspective — one that recognizes lighting as a pivotal element in creating healing environments.
