Texas Oncology has opened a new 50,000-square-foot cancer center in Amarillo, expanding the capacity of the practice to meet the growing need for cancer care in the Texas Panhandle region. The comprehensive cancer center provides medical oncology, hematology, gynecologic oncology, radiation oncology, breast imaging, surgical oncology, and colon and rectal surgery.
In addition, the new center provides a full-service medically integrated pharmacy, access to clinical trials, genetic testing and evaluation, educational services, and support groups to address patients’ psychological and emotional health. The center also offers 2D and 3D screening and diagnostic mammography through Texas Breast Specialists–Amarillo, which is designated by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.
The design was inspired by Amarillo’s unique landscape. For the interior, the team focused on the region’s wide, uninterrupted horizon with a color palette that pairs warm earth tones with cool sky blues. Materials were selected for their visible texture and linearity, evoking the layers and strata visible in nearby Palo Duro Canyon. The light monitors that line the main spine of the building create a sense of movement and connect patients and staff throughout the space to natural light. The striations of the building’s exterior panels draw the eye upward to the West Texas sky, expansive over the high plains.
The new Amarillo facility is part of a more than $150-million investment by Texas Oncology in capital improvements statewide over the past six years. The project team included Skiles Group and Perkins&Will.
