The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy have announced the winners of the 2023 ENERGY STAR Awards. Winners, which represent the top ENERGY STAR partners, are making significant contributions in support of the clean energy transition. This year’s healthcare-related winners, and their categories, along with key respective accomplishments, include:
Memorial Hermann Health System
Partner of the Year: Sustained Excellence, Energy Management
Memorial Hermann Health System, based in Texas, annually certifies all eligible hospitals and designs new ones to ENERGY STAR standards. Key 2022 accomplishments include:
- Certifying 21 buildings as ENERGY STAR, including 10 hospitals
- Recruiting 139 healthcare facilities to join the 8th Texas Energy Roundup, a co-branded ENERGY STAR competition, and helping hospitals across the state reduce energy use
- Presenting in support of the ENERGY STAR medical imaging equipment specification at a conference and sharing best operating practices with healthcare engineers
- Refining construction guidelines to electrify heating in new construction, renovations and expansions
American Society for Health Care Engineering of the American Hospital Association
Partner of the Year: Sustained Excellence, Energy Efficiency Program Delivery
Members of The American Society for Health Care Engineering of the American Hospital Association design, build and operate healthcare facilities. ASHE has used ENERGY STAR as a foundation for its Energy to Care program, helping hospitals achieve $550 million in energy savings since 2010. Key 2022 accomplishments include:
- Benchmarking over 4,400 healthcare facilities in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and using ENERGY STAR scores as the basis of its awards program
- Creating a pro bono verification program to increase the number of ENERGY STAR-certified healthcare facilities
- Modeling its Energy to Care Treasure Hunt after the ENERGY STAR Treasure Hunt and identifying savings opportunities from $116,000 to $2 million in five facilities
Atrium Health
Partner of the Year: Sustained Excellence, Energy Management
Charlotte, North Carolina-based Atrium Health continues to improve its operational efficiency by using ENERGY STAR as the foundation of its energy management program, reducing energy across its portfolio. Key 2022 accomplishments include:
- Doubling the number of ENERGY STAR certifications to 27 facilities since 2021, including six hospitals
- Adding 13 newly acquired hospitals to its ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager account and achieving 6% energy savings in each for the first year, on average
- Saving 1.7% energy across its portfolio, while adding 15 million square feet of new healthcare space
Ohio Hospital Association
Partner of the Year: Sustained Excellence, Energy Efficiency Program Delivery
The Ohio Hospital Association is a statewide federation of hospitals and health systems. OHA promoted ENERGY STAR resources to Ohio hospitals to help members meet sustainability objectives. Key 2022 accomplishments include:
- Reducing energy use across 119 participating hospitals
- Supporting 19 hospital ENERGY STAR certifications, including two new certifications
- Continuing to support hospital compliance with the city of Columbus energy disclosure law requiring benchmarking in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager
