The new White Plains Center for Advanced Medicine and Surgery in New York has been named a winner in the Brick Industry Association’s 2022 Brick in Architecture Awards. Winners demonstrate why clay brick matters as a sustainable material with infinite design possibilities, enduring value, superior durability, fire resistance and energy savings.

The 252,000-square-foot center fulfills White Plains Hospital’s masterplan vision, transforming the 127-year-old institution with this dedicated outpatient facility. The nine-story building completes the hospital’s goal to consolidate all outpatient services within a dedicated, patient-friendly destination for advanced care.

Located on the southeast corner of the hospital’s main campus, the aesthetic vision for the exterior of the new center reflects the colors, materials and textures of the main campus. Inspired by the brick and limestone buildings original to the campus, CAMS is composed of a blend of similarly toned taupe bricks upon precast concrete panels, accented by large areas of curtainwall glazing with painted aluminum accents. The design team selected thin brick for the precast concrete panel facing, as it was the most economical solution for the recreation of a brick language prevalent on the campus. It was also the most lightweight. Working closely with the manufacturer, the project team was able to provide the necessary obtuse and acute-angled bricks required by the building’s form.

    Key project team members include:

    • Architect: Perkins Eastman
    • Brick manufacturer: Cloud Ceramics
    • Brick distributor: Belden Tri-State Building Materials
    • Mason contractor: Coreslab Structures
