Seven Projects Selected for AIA Healthcare Design Awards

The American Institute of Architects’ Academy of Architecture for Health is recognizing seven projects with its 2022 Healthcare Design Awards.

The awards recognize designs that help solve aesthetic, civic, urban and social problems, while also being functional and sustainable. Eligible projects can include healthcare building design, healthcare planning and healthcare design-oriented research. For more details, visit aia.org. This year’s projects were awarded by a six-person jury in the following categories:

Category A: Built: Less than $25 million (construction cost)

  • Rural Ortho Clinic, Cedarburg, Wisconsin, project team: Johnsen Schmaling Architects, M Squared Engineering, Core 4 Engineering and Devix Heating & Cooling

Category B: Built: More than $25 million (construction cost)

  • Center for Health & Wellbeing, Winter Park, Florida, project team: Duda|Paine Architects, Jack Jennings & Sons, Paul J. Ford & Company, Stantec, Donald W. McIntosh Associates, Foster Conant & Associates and Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design

Category C: Renovations/Remodeled: Primarily built within existing hospital or clinical space or adaptive reuse of an existing building to a healthcare use

  • Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, project team: Payette, AKF Group, Simon Design Engineering, E3i, Acentech, Cavanaugh Tocci Associates, Available Light, Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Lerch Bates, elite|studio e, C/W Design Group, Selbert Perkins Design and Walsh Brothers
  • UCSF Connie Frank Transplant Center, San Francisco, project team: NBBJ, Dome Construction, Estructure, Interface Engineering and Brightworks

Category D: Unbuilt: Must be commissioned for compensation by a client with the authority and intention to build

  • Kyabirwa Surgical Center Ward, Jinja, Uganda, project team: GKG, Selemani Engineers
  • Montage Health Ohana Center, Monterey, California, project team: NBBJ, Integral Group, Fast + Epp, Whitson Engineers, BFS Landscape Architects, South Bay Construction, Antonio Acoustics, NG Associates and Jensen Hughes
  • Uganda Women’s and Children’s Clinic, Mityana, Uganda, project team: LS3P Go Design Inc.
