Construction Complete at Midwest Transplant Network

McCownGordon Construction completed a $21-million expansion and renovation at Midwest Transplant Network headquarters in Westwood, Kansas. Responsible for coordinating the recovery of donated organs and tissues for transplantation, MTN provides ongoing services to donor families, hospitals across both Kansas and Western Missouri and transplant centers nationwide, as well as community outreach to increase awareness of the desperate need for donation.

The interior renovation relocated the existing office space and café to the second floor and replaced the existing tissue recovery suite with five new fully integrated operating rooms and clinical space. The addition of a seven-bed intensive care unit will allow for the specialized care of donor patients in addition to onsite organ recovery, ultimately minimizing the burden on hospitals by freeing up ICU beds, operating rooms, ventilators and critical care staff to care for other medically complex patients.

MTN also improved operational efficiencies and implemented technology with the replacement of mechanical penthouse equipment and the installation of cloud-based technology with the ability to remotely connect with surgeons across the country. The exterior expansion includes a private pull-through ambulance garage, a patio addition and a donor memorial garden that provides a space for families to honor the donor heroes and the gift of donation. This was an occupied renovation with multiple tenants, therefore a multi-phase project. Tissue recovery has been fully operating throughout the course of construction.

By allowing more predictable timeframes for families and transplant teams, the expansion and renovations streamline the donation process and significantly increase MTN’s efficiency in the donation process.

The project was completed in collaboration with Hoefer Welker.
