Construction has begun on Houston Methodist’s new Cypress campus. Houston Methodist’s ninth hospital in the greater Houston, Texas area, the campus sits on 106 acres and will consist of a seven-story hospital, two medical office buildings and a central utility plant. The hospital will also incorporate technological advancements from the healthcare system’s Center for Innovation, which launched in 2018. Construction is scheduled to achieve substantial completion by the end of 2024.

The project scope includes demolition of 11 existing buildings, totaling 600,000 square feet, formerly occupied by Sysco Corp. The new hospital will consist of a 570,700-square-foot, seven-story building, while the two MOBs will be six stories each. The first, totaling over 162,900 square feet, will contain a cancer center with linear accelerator and a bridge connector to the new hospital tower. The second, totaling 160,200 square feet, will include a sports and orthopedic rehabilitation clinic. The existing 29,000-square-foot central utility plant will also be renovated.

All structures, including the hospital and both MOBs, are pan-deck concrete structures, with envelopes consisting of masonry and glazing. While the construction process uses standard materials, challenges include multiple supply chain issues and an aggressive schedule for completion. Due to this aggressive schedule and the large scale of the project, the project team is working to involve numerous trade partners on the construction effort to work simultaneously.

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. was selected as the general contractor, with Page as the project architect. Walter P. Moore is the project structural and civil engineer; SSR will handle mechanical, electrical and plumbing; OJB is the landscape architect and Vizient is overseeing medical equipment planning.
