Design of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital Incorporates Rejuvenation, Restoration + Rehabilitation

The design of the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, a new 93,000-square-foot rehabilitation hospital adjacent to the Covenant Healthcare hospital facility in Saginaw, Michigan, is complete. This state-of-the-art rehab hospital features 45 hospital beds, with expansion space to add an additional 15 rooms as demand grows. The project team included Spence Brothers as construction manager and HED as architect.

Dating back to 1891, Mary Free Bed is the largest nonprofit rehabilitation system in the country with facilities in Michigan and Northern Indiana, with the new Saginaw location as one of its largest. The design focused on organizing inpatient and outpatient visitors into appropriate zones, while also providing differing entrances for direct referrals coming from the adjacent community facilities.

From the onset of the project, HED focused on providing an environment of care centered on the concepts of rejuvenation, restoration and rehabilitation. To deliver on this goal, the facility incorporates significant amounts of both art and nature, amidst the latest rehabilitation care technology and tools.
