Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, a member of Trinity Health Of New England, and S/L/A/M Construction Services and the Design-Build team, recently celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Lighthouse Surgery Center in Hartford, Connecticut. The new center is a joint venture between Saint Francis Hospital, Lighthouse Surgeons, a group of orthopedic and spine surgeons and Woodland Anesthesiology Associates.

The 35,000-square-foot, $26-million facility features six orthopedic ORs, complete onsite sterile processing, a distinctive 26-bay pre- and post-op area, a physical therapy space and a welcoming, double-height reception/lobby area that initiates a carefully planned patient-centered care experience that extends throughout the facility. Doctors will treat orthopedic patients with sports injuries, joint replacement and surgical spine procedures, as well as pain management, all in one location.

SLAM’s multi-disciplinary in-house team provides the project with a unique integrated Design-Build delivery method, which streamlines the process by bringing planning, design and construction together from the early stages of the project through completion, ensuring team collaboration, quality and efficiency.

The project team developed a structural column grid that provided an efficient framework for planning, construction and future growth. The resulting structural/planning module effectively accommodated the program, provided flexibility for future needs and was cost effective to build.
