Behavioral Health Facility Brings Outdoors In, Spurs Area Redevelopment

The University of Kansas Health System Strawberry Hill Campus, located in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, recently opened. Renovating an unoccupied building to become a behavioral health facility, the 110,000-square-foot campus features 47 private patient rooms, a tiered interior atrium, music and art therapy rooms, quiet rooms, administrative offices, kitchen and dining venues. In addition, the exterior received upgraded site utilities, new ambulance drop-off and recreational courtyard.

To take advantage of the existing design elements and enhance healing, the team installed over 1,400 live plants within the atrium to create a sense of the outdoors, evoking a calming environment for patients and staff.

The project team included JE Dunn Construction and CannonDesign.

Since the facility opened, the surrounding community has seen a surge in redevelopment efforts. Inspired by the renovation, other businesses are following suit to reinvigorate the development in the city and nearby areas.
