Larger Surgical Suites, Support Spaces Set to Enhance Care for Atlanta, Georgia Community
Grady Health System has selected Gresham Smith to renovate the operating rooms and support spaces at Grady Memorial Hospital, the safety-net public hospital and only Level I trauma center in Atlanta, Georgia. The project is part of a larger expansion plan to meet the long-term needs of underserved populations in Fulton County.
Prior to beginning the design, the architect conducted a study of Grady’s operating room suites and support spaces. Based on the space analysis, the project team will convert undersized operating rooms on the hospital’s sixth and fourth floors into fewer, but larger operating and procedure rooms that enhance patient care.
The larger surgical suites will give Grady staff the flexibility to perform a variety of procedures in the new, standardized operating rooms, from cardiac cases and joint replacements to full trauma surgeries. Upgraded technology, state-of-the-art lighting and appropriately sized equipment support booms will improve operational efficiencies, while aesthetic upgrades to common areas, staff lounges and supply storage will elevate the patient and provider experience.
Construction on the operating rooms and support spaces will be phased to keep ample surgical spaces available for patient care.
