A grand opening celebration was recently held for ProMedica Toledo Hospital’s Generations Tower, located in Ohio. The $350-million replacement tower is the largest, single-construction project in the organization’s history. The project team included The Lathrop Company and HKS.

Toledo Hospital has played a fundamental role in caring for communities in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan since 1874. Generations Tower features 13 stories and 309 private rooms. The tower allows for various improvements in the patient experience, including convenient parking, private rooms, improved food service and hotel-like amenities.

The design of the tower was developed through comprehensive studies of hospital processes, as well as significant input from physicians, nurses, clinical staff and support team members. Key benefits for patients and their families, as well as hospital staff include:

    • More time for care: Room design and floor layouts will be designed to reduce walking time by more than 50%.
    • Better access to caregivers: All private and “smart” rooms featuring user-friendly technology will provide patients more immediate access to nurses, dietitians and other hospital staff.
    • Enhanced nurse and physician communication: The optimized floor and room layouts will make it easier for nurses and physicians to connect and collaborate.
    • Keeping families connected: The intensive care unit rooms will be more than 50% larger to comfortably accommodate loved ones for overnight visits. Accessible, at-the-door parking also will reduce stress and save time for visitors.
