The Inova Dwight and Martha Schar Cancer Institute in Fairfax, Virginia has recently opened. The new facility, a department of Inova Fairfax Hospital, serves as a hub for clinical, research and technological expertise and also serves Inova’s existing locations for cancer treatment across Northern Virginia. As part of the first phase of development, the new building occupies over 438,000 square feet on the 117-acre Inova Center for Personalized Health campus.
As part of this project, general contractor Clark Construction renovated 264,000 square feet of existing space to make way for the cancer institute, as well as medical offices, a pharmacy and clinical space for oncology, clinical trials and research. The project team is also constructing a 78,000-square-foot addition to accommodate five linear accelerator vaults, imagery and nuclear medical suites and a breast imaging center and surgical breast clinic. The infusion center includes 48 chairs and the radiation oncology department houses five vaults. In addition, the project scope included construction of a new pavilion, which will serve as the main entry to the new facility.
Wilmot Sanz, Inc. served as architect on the project.
