    Dewberry’s Dan Koenigshofer and John Roberts Receive Award for ASHRAE’s Best Article of 2018

    Dan Koenigshofer, P.E., MSPH, HFDP, SASHE, and John Roberts, P.E., MSPH, HFDP, LEED AP BD+C, have been recognized with the 2018 Journal Paper of the Year by the ASHRAE Journal. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers seeks to advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigerating to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. The organization has more than 50,000 members worldwide.

    In their article entitled “Do OA Economizers Make ‘Cents’ in Hospitals?,” Koenigshofer and Roberts detail the costs and savings of utilizing outside air economizers in hospital ventilation systems. They concluded that these systems do not make “cents” in hospitals. The findings have major implications for building codes throughout the U.S. North Carolina has changed its code to no longer require these systems.

    With nearly 45 years of experience, Koenigshofer is vice president for healthcare engineering and provides technical oversight and subject matter expertise in the firm’s Raleigh, North Carolina office. He earned a master’s in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s in physics from the University of California. In addition to being an active member of ASHRAE and serving as editor-in-chief for the HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinic, Second Edition, Koenigshofer is a Senior in American Society for Healthcare Engineering. He is also active in the North Carolina Healthcare Engineers Association.

    Roberts is a senior mechanical engineer with more than four decades of experience. In the firm’s Raleigh office, he designs mechanical systems for institutional clients with a primary focus on healthcare facilities. Roberts earned a master’s in environmental science and engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Cornell University.
