SmithGroup has hired Joseph Maytum as a principal and corporate senior medical planner. In this role, Maytum adds specialized expertise in strategic master planning and pediatric healthcare to the firm’s global Health Practice.

Maytum has more than 25 years of experience in the optimization of hospital systems through design, previously serving as a senior medical planner and healthcare director at Jacobs Engineering. Clients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Nemours Children’s Health System, Texas Children’s Hospital, Medical Clinic of Houston, Children’s Cancer Hospital Foundation – Egypt and University of Texas Medical Branch, among others, have benefited from Maytum’s ability to develop data-driven growth projections and leverage them to craft flexible facility and master plan solutions.

Maytum joins the practice’s leadership team to further strengthen its position in the pediatric marketplace, where clients include Valley Children’s Medical Group, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children’s Medical Center Dallas and Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Maytum’s expertise ranges from system master plans, bed tower expansions, next-generation heart centers, emergency departments and medical research labs; however, he has a particular specialization in creating family focused and staff-friendly pediatric environments. “Most of my career has been dedicated to designing for pediatric healthcare, but it is more than simply my occupation,” explains Maytum. He understands children’s health facilities on a personal level—his three sons receive care at a campus he designed. “Your child receiving treatment can be one of the most trying experiences of your life as a parent. I plan and design to make the experience as comforting and nurturing for patients and their families as possible.”

Maytum earned a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Houston in Houston, Texas. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects Houston chapter, a LEED accredited professional and a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt in healthcare. He is also a visiting guest lecturer and critic at Texas A&M University.
