Sentara Cancer Center Celebrates Topping Out Milestone
The Sentara Cancer Center, located on the campus of Sentara Leigh Hospital, located in Norfolk, Virginia, recently celebrated a milestone in construction with a topping out ceremony, during which the final steel beam was placed on the structure before interior finishing begins.
The event signifies the hard work of the construction team, as well as a celebration for community cancer survivors. The beam was marked with daffodils, a symbol of hope in the cancer community, and survivors were asked to sign the petals of the daffodil before the beam was lifted into place.
The $93.5-million building is projected to be complete in mid-2020. The new center will bring together expert care teams from Sentara Medical Group, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Virginia Oncology Associates and other community physicians to provide compassionate, personalized cancer care. Outpatient oncology services centralized in one cancer center will give patients and families access to a single location for multiple appointments and treatments in a healing environment.
The general contractor on the project is Whiting-Turner, with Odell serving as architect.
