DES PLAINES, Ill. – Chicago Faucets recently released a new white paper, Reducing the Risk of HAIs in Healthcare Facilities, which discusses solutions designed specifically to assist in reducing the transmission of bacteria in healthcare facilities. It also discusses the importance of hand hygiene, explaining how improvements in hand-washing can help combat transmissions of waterborne bacteria, such as Legionella, from the water supply to patients and hospital personnel.

The white paper discusses in detail four options used to mitigate transmission of waterborne bacteria: adjustments in water flow and temperature, chemical treatment and antibacterial treatment. Also discussed are product options specifically designed to assist in reducing the transmission of bacteria by both hands and water, such as thermostatic mixing valves and programmable touch-free faucets.

The white paper touches on the healthcare law’s strong financial incentive to reduce the spread of bacteria. Approximately 1.7 million HAIs occur in U.S. hospitals each year, resulting in 99,000 deaths and an estimated $20 billion in healthcare costs.
