Methodist Healthcare Board Approves Plan to File CON
The Methodist Healthcare board of directors recently approved a plan to file a certificate of need for a master campus plan for Methodist University Hospital, the healthcare system’s flagship hospital and the city’s academic medical center in Memphis, Tennessee. This plan, set for CON filing in February of 2016, will modernize the hospital, enhance the patient- and family centered care experience and will relocate services to improve patient flow.
The project includes the addition of a 700-space parking garage, which will increase campus parking by 100 spaces. Because this structure does not require state approval, it is set to break ground in February 2016. The expansion also includes a 440,000-square-foot addition which will create room to relocate services into a centralized location within the hospital, as well as provide state-of-the-art medical technology. The relocation of such services as oncology, transplant services and outpatient services into a centralized location will increase efficiency for medical staff, patients and visitors.
With the expansion also comes the removal of several older buildings on campus, including the crews building and the eventual demolition of the system’s former nursing college, Wilson Hall. The demolition of the crews building, located on the corner of Union Avenue and South Bellevue, will provide room for an open green space area and shift the primary entrance of the hospital to provide better visibility and wayfinding for patients and visitors.
Of the state approves the CON, construction for the entire campus plan will begin soon and is expected to take more than three years to complete, with a target date of completion mid-2019.
As plans become finalized, additional details will be made available.
