CHICAGO, Ill. — The Energy to Care benchmarking and awards program, run by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering, reached an important milestone recently when the 1,000th facility joined the free program. Since 2009, hospitals participating in the program have tracked more than $67 million in energy savings.
Sutter Health, a system with more than 500 facilities throughout Northern California, put Energy to Care over the 1,000-facility mark when all hospitals within the system joined. Because Energy to Care integrates with the widely used Portfolio Manager program from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, large systems can have hundreds of facilities join Energy to Care with the click of a mouse.
The Energy to Care program, sponsored by Johnson Controls, provides a robust dashboard that makes it easy to visualize shared energy use data within facilities. The program also offers systems the opportunity to host challenges introducing a little friendly competition between various facilities within a health system or a geographical region.
Earlier this year, ASHE announced the 2015 winners of the Energy to Care Awards. More than 20 hospitals across the country were recognized for reducing energy consumption by 10 percent or more over their baseline numbers.
