MIAMI, Fla. — Gresham, Smith and Partners recently completed the Innovative Cancer Institute in Miami, Florida. The 61,500-square-foot, four-story radiation and cancer treatment facility includes a clinical area, offices and open-air parking garage. The Innovative Cancer Institute is located on the building’s first floor and features a new Varian Edge radiotherapy system, a first-of-its-kind technology in the state of Florida.
The building is styled with sleek, progressive features that complement the emerging South Miami neighborhood. Aluminum cladding, frosted and clear glass, brushed metal signage and a smooth-texture white stucco finish distinguish the exterior. Eye-catching interior features such as art collections, waiting-area landscaping and views to lush gardens generate interest and alleviate anxiety. Neutral, contemporary offices and clinical areas contribute to a calming aesthetic.
The Varian Edge system delivers flexible cancer treatments and tumor-destroying radiation for a variety of cancer types with pinpoint accuracy and precision, ease and speed while protecting surrounding healthy tissue. The equipment is housed in a radiation-shielded treatment vault constructed with stackable ultra-high-density concrete blocks, an entry door and modular interior finishes.
The Innovative Cancer Institute’s other treatment technologies include brachytherapy, conformal therapy, IMRT, IGRT and RapidArc; as well as a dedicated 64-slice wide-bore “state-of-the-art” Siemens CT scanner for radiation treatment planning.
GS&P has recently completed design services for the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, as well as the Marcus Neuroscience Institute Addition and Imaging Renovation for Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Boca Raton, Florida. ANF Group, Inc. was the general contractor on the project.
