TAMPA, Fla. — Gresham, Smith and Partners recently completed the 335,000-square-foot, 90-bed St. Joseph’s Hospital-South and an attached 85,000-square-foot medical office building in Riverview, Florida. Barton Malow Company served as contractor. The four-story hospital includes an emergency department, surgery suite, imaging area, intensive care unit and maternity unit. The hospital design can accommodate expansion up to more than 300 beds. Coupled with the adjacent three-story MOB, the facility provides integrated inpatient and outpatient healthcare services to residents of the growing southern Hillsborough County region.
“The GS&P team worked closely with hospital administrators to develop a successful design, building off our previous master planning analyses and lessons learned by the client from St. Joseph’s Hospital-North, which had recently been completed when we started our initial design work,” said Christina Wilson, AIA, NCARB, EDAC, LEED AP, project manager at Gresham, Smith and Partners. “The patient and family experience is the first and foremost priority with every aspect of the design. From the spa-like interiors to the lushly landscaped gardens to the hospital’s strategic positioning that maximizes views of the beautiful 72-acre site, we strived to represent the client’s goals of quality, comfort and serenity.”
The emergency department has a public external corridor loop, as well as a staff-only interior core that feeds into all private exam rooms. Six operating rooms include OR integration systems and robotic technology. Adjacent to the surgical suites, two interventional radiology labs share a preparation area, phase-II recovery space and PACU space, with shelled space available for two future interventional labs. Each inpatient room supports hospitality and the patient/family experience with a sofa bed, relaxation area and outlets for computers and phones.
