Brasfield & Gorrie Celebrates Construction Milestone with WakeMed Health & Hospitals

RALEIGH, N.C. — Brasfield & Gorrie recently celebrated a construction milestone at WakeMed North Healthplex in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the general contractor is completing a $66.3-million expansion project. WakeMed-North-Topping-Out_RWakeMed Health & Hospitals, a private, not-for-profit healthcare organization based in Raleigh, is transforming the existing Healthplex into Wake County’s fifth full-service hospital, WakeMed North Hospital.

A topping out ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of structural construction on the expansion, which will create a five-story, 131,000-square-foot, 61-bed acute care hospital focusing on inpatient women’s specialty services. The hospital will offer a full range of obstetric and gynecological services, including comprehensive preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic care. In addition, WakeMed North Hospital will continue to serve men and children through the facility’s existing emergency department and outpatient surgery, rehabilitation, imaging, lab and physician services.

The expansion project also includes a one-story, 8,550-square-foot central energy plant and an expanded parking area.

Serving as general contractor, Brasfield & Gorrie is teaming with architects ColeJenest & Stone, Mulkey Engineers & Consultants, BBH Design and Dewberry on this project. Construction on the expansion project began in September 2013. WakeMed North Hospital is scheduled to open for patient care on Mother’s Day 2015.

The project is pursuing LEED Gold certification.
