Joint Replacement Center at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital Completed in 10 Months Utilizing Lean Concepts, IPD

After 10 months of construction, the new Certified Joint Replacement Center was completed at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn. Moser Pilon Nelson Architects, along with AZ Corporation, delivered the project utilizing Lean concepts and Integrated Project Delivery led by the hospital. The $5.5-million project included complete renovation of the existing 12,000-square-foot unit along with a 4,500-square-foot addition onto an adjacent rooftop.

The renovated and new rooms allow for greater accessibility for patients, including barrier-free showers and increased maneuverability at the bathroom fixtures, which was critical for patient and staff satisfaction. Family zone areas with built-in bench seating and enhanced lighting options make for a more pleasant visitor experience. Staff areas were reworked to reduce noise levels, reduce nursing steps and to provide decentralized work areas.

The rooftop addition allowed for the number of private rooms to increase by 10 to bring the total to 22.
