LOS ANGELES, Calif. –HGA Architects and Engineers has hired Stan Chiu, AIA, LEED AP, as a principal in its Los Angeles, Calif. office.

Stan_Chiu_Headshot_Crop“Stan brings extensive design leadership experience in the healthcare and higher education markets,” said James Matson, AIA, vice president and principal with HGA. “He has particular knowledge of the economic, demographic and technological changes impacting our clients’ industries nationally. Stan promotes an integrated design process, enlisting the knowledge and expertise of planners, designers, contractors, owners and consultants to deliver efficient, cost-effective architectural solutions. We are happy to welcome Stan to our team as we continue to expand our client services in healthcare and higher education throughout California.”

Chiu has more than 20 years of experience directing design projects for such clients as Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, Mayo Clinic, University of Southern California, Los Angeles Harbor College and East Los Angeles College.

Chiu is an industry leader in Lean design and Integrated Project Delivery.  He has helped develop such core Lean IPD tools as Target Value Design and Set Based Design, which manage integrated design building system development and comprehensive construction costs.

Before joining HGA, Chiu was with another national firm in Los Angeles, where he served domestic and international markets. He previously worked with HGA from 2004 to 2010.

“HGA focuses on building collaborative, multidisciplinary teams to bring innovation to clients,” Chiu said. “Architecture has enormous potential to address the fundamental challenges of our time. Many facility owners are seeking to improve business productivity. Healthcare clients are looking to lower costs while improving patient outcomes; higher education clients are rethinking traditional learning models amid evolving technology and student demographics. Our role at HGA is to work with clients to create strategic business advantages through architecture.”

Chiu has a Master of Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture from Wesleyan University. He is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Chiu has authored numerous articles on architecture, healthcare delivery and Lean design for national trade journals, and has lectured on Lean IPD at AIA conferences, Lean Construction Institute conferences, University of California Berkeley, California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo and Disney Imagineering, among other venues.
