STANFORD, Calif. – A new chapter in the history of Stanford Hospital & Clinics began May 1 with the official groundbreaking for the new Stanford Hospital. The facility will add 824,000 square feet to the existing hospital, increase patient capacity to 600 beds and expand intensive care and emergency services. Construction is expected to be completed in 2017 and patient care will begin in 2018.
“Stanford Hospital & Clinics seeks to transform patient care, with a focus on delivering our unique brand of leading edge and coordinated care,” said Amir Dan Rubin, president and CEO, Stanford Hospital & Clinics. “Advancing the way in which care is delivered requires state-of-the-art facilities that are designed to provide patients with a healing environment and can accommodate new technologies as they become available. We believe the new Stanford Hospital will be the world’s most advanced inpatient setting.”
The facilty was designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects. It will feature individual patient rooms with large windows that provide extensive natural light – proven to speed the healing process – and ample space for family members to gather and even spend the night. At the heart of the hospital will be a garden level that provides a quiet retreat for patients and families. The facility also incorporates the latest in green technology to reduce the hospital’s environmental impact.
“The new Stanford Hospital will serve the local community, even as its benefits are felt well beyond it — in excellent patient care, the development of innovative therapies and treatments and the education of tomorrow’s healthcare leaders,” said John L. Hennessy, president, Stanford University. “It would not be possible without the collective efforts of many people — our local government, our generous donors, members of the Stanford family and our surrounding communities.”
Construction of the new hospital is part of the $5-billion Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project that will bring facilities to current seismic safety standards and support the growth of the overall medical center. The renewal project has already renovated the Hoover Pavilion into a one-stop location for innovative primary care services, and is expanding Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Numerous School of Medicine laboratories will also be replaced under the project.
“With the renovation, Stanford Medicine will be able to provide its pre-eminent care in a pre-eminent facility,” said Lloyd Minor, M.D., dean, Stanford University School of Medicine. “But more than that, the renovation will allow us to transform patient care and the patient experience as we implement new models of integrated care built around the needs of our patients.”
Construction of the new Stanford Hospital is being funded through a combination of hospital funds, private donations and the support of leading Silicon Valley companies. Fundraising for the project is ongoing, through the Campaign for Stanford Medicine. General contractor is Clark/McCarthy (joint venture).
