INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indianapolis architect Gary Vance, FAIA, FACHA, LEED AP, has been elected into the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in recognition of his healthcare design leadership and contribution to the evolution of the architectural practice.
Vance ─ national director of healthcare at BSA LifeStructures in Indianapolis ─ is the only Indiana architect to be elevated to the College of Fellows in 2013, a distinction that’s awarded to less than 3 percent of the nearly 80,000 AIA architects.
With a career spanning 36 years, Vance has been involved in the planning and design of more than 500 healthcare facilities. He is nationally recognized for his healthcare planning and design expertise, including developing Lean design and Evidence-Based Design principles, which have been shown to improve patient outcomes. His experience in healthcare benchmarking was instrumental in the formation of LifeStructures Metrics-BSA LifeStructures’ research on the relationship between physical environments and operational and clinical outcomes.
Vance is best known for his healthcare planning and design work, including the Franciscan St. Francis Campus Expansion in Indianapolis. His most recent work includes planning for the IU Health Saxony Hospital in Fishers and IU Health’s Neurosciences Institute Campus in Indianapolis. Both projects are using Lean design principles to improve the quality of care and reduce operational costs.
Vance speaks around the country to healthcare leaders and architects on the relationship between design and improved healthcare outcomes. His research on patient outcomes has been published in some of the nation’s most recognized healthcare publications.
Vance is a founding member and Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Architects and is the exam committee chairman for the organization. A 1977 graduate of the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University, Vance joined BSA LifeStructures in 1997. The College of Architecture and Planning presented him with their Distinguished Alumni Award in 2010. He will be among 122 architects across the country to be inducted into the 2013 Class of Fellows in June at the AIA National Convention in Denver, Colo.
