WASHINGTON, D.C. –EwingCole has been selected by the Johns Hopkins Health System to design a new radiation oncology addition and renovation to the Bayview Medical Office Building. The Sydney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center will open in late 2013.

“The new Kimmel Cancer Center presents an extraordinary opportunity not only to expand treatment capacity but also to create an environment that gives evidence of the compassion and quality of care at Johns Hopkins,” said Andy Jarvis, AIA, LEED AP, principal of EwingCole’s Healthcare Practice.

The 18,000-square-foot addition will include exam/consult rooms, clinical support space, linear accelerators and a radiation therapy simulator. The 7,500-square-foot renovation includes vitals/phlebotomy, an infusion area and oncology pharmacy. The project’s estimated construction cost is $10,500,000.

“Over the past nine years, EwingCole has designed 20 new outpatient cancer centers. Our team of architects, engineers and interior designers are veterans of these projects,” continued Jarvis. “With each new cancer center, we find ways to improve the efficiency of care, enhance the cancer patients’ experience, improve energy efficiency and reduce construction costs.”

EwingCole is a national expert in cancer center design and has designed facilities for National Cancer Institute designated centers including Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Fox Chase Cancer Center, City of Hope National Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. Additional cancer center clients include AtlantiCare Health System, North Shore Long Island Jewish and SUNY Upstate Medical University.
