VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System recently dedicated its consolidation building. Astorino, with associate architect, HDR, designed the facility to provide ease of access to comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services. The facility was built by PJ Dick.
The Consolidation Building is a 194,850-square-foot, five-story building attached to the existing acute care hospital at VA Pittsburgh’s University Drive campus.
A new, centralized hub-and-spoke main entrance connects the existing acute care hospital, business service area, emergency room, new 1,500-space parking garage and Consolidation Building. A clear glass, self-supporting roof allows natural light to fill the lobby area.
Three floors are dedicated to inpatient care and each include expansive day rooms to provide patients with the opportunity to socialize with other patients,
meet with visitors, engage in activities or enjoy watching television. The inpatient space features day/night orientation to maintain routines of daily living and treatment activities. Access to an open-air rooftop garden, provides the space for patients to relax and connect with nature.
The Consolidation Building is registered for LEED-NC V2.2 certification with the U.S. Green Building Council. The design includes expansive use of natural finish materials including wood wall coverings and stone and terrazzo flooring.
