INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Rollins Construction Company has substantially completed the $93 million renovation and expansion of Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. The new five-story, 155,000 square foot patient tower went into operation last year, and Rollins is now completing more than 103,000 square feet of planned renovation to existing hospital facilities. The expansion and renovation has increased patient capacity at Community Hospital South to 150 private rooms.

“We have faced the significant challenge of construction activity taking place in close proximity to areas of current hospital operations,” said Randy Smith, Project Manager for Rollins Construction.

The new patient tower houses cardiopulmonary services, medical surgical beds, meeting and training space, a new main lobby and a mechanical penthouse. Also included is a new 34,500-square-foot surgery suite and administrative space.

Extensive renovations and upgrades were made to four floors of the existing hospital. These areas include the intensive care, surgical, dietary services, pharmacy department, medical / surgery rooms, labor and delivery, outpatient services and administrative offices.

In addition, an 8,048-square-foot expansion of the hospital’s central plant now accommodates the additional services to support both the expanded and renovated facilities.

The project was delivered using the design/assist method with the casework, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, structural steel and curtain wall subcontractors. This method allowed the collaborative team to maintain the cost by validating the pricing at each portion of the design phase, from schematic design through construction documents.

Construction began in March 2008. Architect of the project was RTKL Associates, Inc. BSA Life Structures provided the civil, landscaping, mechanical, structural and electrical engineering for the project.

Founded by the Rollins family in 1977, Rollins Construction Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of S. M. Wilson & Co. S. M. Wilson acquired Rollins in October 2007. S. M. Wilson is a 90-year-old, full-service construction management, design/build and general contracting firm with headquarters in St. Louis. It is one of the largest general construction and construction management firms in the St. Louis area. The company posted $345 million in 2010 revenues, and ranks 149th in Engineering News-Record’s 2010 list of Top 400 commercial contractors nationwide.
