University of Colorado Hospital at the Anschutz Medical Campus and Poudre Valley Health System recently signed a letter of intent, allowing the parties to explore creating a joint operating agreement.

The University of Colorado Hospital Board of Directors and the Poudre Valley Health System Board of Directors voted to move forward in creating a partnership between the institutions.

“The mission and values of University of Colorado Hospital and Poudre Valley Health System are complementary. Both place priority on providing compassionate care for patients, while furthering knowledge and innovation,” said University of Colorado Hospital President and CEO Bruce Schroffel and Poudre Valley Health System CEO Rulon Stacey in a joint statement. “Our goal is simple: to provide the best possible health care to our communities, the state and the Rocky Mountain region.”

Health insurance reform, the increasing complexity and cost of treating patients and a projected shortage of medical professionals were all determining factors in the decision to pursue a joint operating agreement.

Should University of Colorado Hospital and Poudre Valley Health System enter into a joint operating agreement, a joint operating organization will be formed to oversee strategic direction and overall budget for the unified system. University of Colorado Hospital and Poudre Valley Health System will maintain control of operations at their respective facilities.
