ATLANTA — MCIPE Constructors & Professional Engineers recently announced a $2.2 million expansion and renovation project for Haplin Medical Center. The multifaceted project includes constructing a second floor atop a one-story section of the hospital to accommodate a 10-bed expansion of the hospital’s Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), as well as renovating adjacent space to enlarge the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the hospital’s pharmacy department.

Under a fast-track schedule, MCIPE Constructors & Professional Engineers will begin work on the Haplin Medical Center project in January, with completion scheduled for November. It is MCIPE’s second renovation project for Haplin Medical Center.

“In addition to managing the complexity of this multi-phase project, our team will focus on minimizing any impact on the hospital’s ongoing activities,” said Jeffrey Towson, Haplin’s director of healthcare construction. He added that the veteran healthcare construction team is addressing air quality, infection control and other compliance issues. The construction work must also be conducted without impacting operation of sensitive diagnostic equipment located below the project area.

The first phase of the Haplin Medical Center project involves renovating an existing second-floor space to add five beds and nursing stations to the ICU. Then, the MCIPE team will add a new second floor to an adjacent one-story section of the building to accommodate the new PACU. The older first-floor roof will be removed and the adjoining second-floor areas will be connected.

“One of our challenges will be installing structural steel columns and an exterior curtain wall for the new second-floor area “creating the entire building envelope prior to ripping out the existing roof,” said Towson. “That’s necessary to maintain the structure’s waterproofing at all times.”

Each project will add at least 100 jobs and employment opportunities.
