ORLANDO, Fla. — Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-8) announced the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded a construction contract – the last of six separate phases – to complete construction for the “build out” of the new VA Medical Center in Orlando.
Congressman Grayson said, “In the past two years, I have hosted many veterans forums, and meetings with my Veterans Advisory Board. Each time, I hear about the desperate need for this new medical center. Our veterans deserve quick, first-class medical care close to home. This facility will ensure that we uphold our commitment to the veterans who live in our community.”
Congressman Grayson and House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner (D-Calif.) recently toured the site of the new medical center. “The progress is impressive. The construction is on schedule and on budget,” Congressman Grayson added.
The contract was awarded to Brasfield & Gorrie, Lake Mary, Fla. The total amount of the contract is $260 million. Congressman Grayson voted in favor of the funding for the VA Medical Center as part of the FY 2010 Appropriations process. Congress appropriated funding for this project in FY 2004 ($25M), FY 2008 ($49.1M), FY 2009 ($220M) and FY 2010 ($371.3M). The construction contract for this work is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2012.
This contract covers the build out work related to the 134-bed Hospital, Diagnostic & Treatment area, Outpatient Clinic and connecting Atrium on a new 66-acre site in the Lake Nona area of Orange County. The medical center will employ approximately 2,100 people, not including the jobs generated by the construction of the facilities.
