The Hospital of the Future, Today

Designed by HGA Architects and Engineers, the New Owatonna Hospital and Expanded Clinic Forecast Directions in Healthcare Campus Planning

HGAMINNEAPOLIS — As healthcare organizations across the country grapple with healthcare reform and its impact on campus planning and the design and construction of medical facilities, the new Owatonna Hospital and expanded Owatonna Clinic, in Owatonna, Minnesota, forecast new directions in the design of healthcare delivery. Designed by HGA Architects and Engineers, (HGA), the hospital and clinic comprise a significant second phase in the renewal and re-development of the Owatonna Healthcare Campus.

Sited on 20 lush and landscaped acres, adjacent to Minnesota’s Interstate 35, the campus was master planned to provide a responsive, welcoming, 21st-century healthcare environment with the flexibility to address and adapt to changing patient delivery and technological needs.

In forecasting the ways in which healthcare increasingly will be designed, the Owatonna project signals a growing movement toward the consolidation of healthcare through a collocation of appropriate facilities onto a single healthcare campus.

Moreover, the project’s second-phase consolidation of a hospital and clinic brings two different healthcare organizations together on a single campus. The two-story hospital, owned and operated by Allina Hospitals and Clinics, is physically connected to the expanded clinic, owned and operated by Mayo Health System. Designed as one facility on the campus, the new complex provides a seamless, continuous system of efficient, high-quality healthcare to the community.

In addition to representing a new iteration in the consolidation of care with built-in flexibility for future growth, the project also exemplifies the application of Lean Principles to healthcare, by which HGA reduced or eliminated unnecessary space and inefficient processes during pre-design to increase cost savings and staff efficiency. Patient and family areas reflect increased attention to a homelike environment and wireless connectivity.

HGA’s design of the Owatonna project also incorporates assets specifically created to promote wellness in the community and share resources with nearby cultural and educational organizations.

“Through master planning and the design of the new hospital and expanded clinic, we’ve ensured the current viability and future growth of the Owatonna Healthcare Campus,” says Gary Nyberg, RA, Principal, HGA. “The collaboration between Allina and Mayo, made seamless through the integration of the hospital and clinic, reduces costs, streamlines efficiencies and vastly improves the patient experience. Moreover, the Owatonna Hospital and Clinic include educational and wellness components that have allowed the facility to become an integral and valued member of the community.”
