DALLAS – Children’s Medical Center Dallas selected HKS, Inc. to design a 34,000 square-foot outpatient specialty center in Southlake to meet the demands of its growing patient base.

The specialty care center, which will be located in Southlake’s Carillon development, will offer pediatric sports medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, urology, imaging and other services. Ultimately, Children’s plans to expand the facility to 69,500-square feet and offer even more services. The timing of the expansion will depend on demand.

According to Roy Gunsolus, principal with HKS, Inc., the specialty care center is a prototype that can be developed throughout the Metroplex to help Children’s serve additional growing populations.  “The Southlake location includes shelled ambulatory surgery space that will be developed as the patient population base is established.”

“We’re quite pleased to join the Southlake community,” said Trent Smith, senior vice president of network development for Children’s. “These pediatric healthcare services will benefit the families of the Southlake area for decades to come.”

HKS was selected due to their vast healthcare experience and knowledge in ambulatory care facilities.” he continued.  “The firm recently completed architectural and interior design work on The Ronald McDonald House of Dallas.  The House, which is family-oriented, friendly and comforting, met the guiding principles for Children’s. We requested the House’s interior designer to be an active member of our design team.”

“We combined our hospitality experience with our healthcare expertise,” said Loretta Fulvio, senior interior designer with HKS Commercial Interiors. “From the outside-in, the center is designed to transport kids into a world of comfort and healing. The design philosophy: sophistication meets whimsical.  Guests enter under a gigantic balloon into a lobby that incorporates playful light fixtures and a natural palette of materials – from the leaf patterned carpeting to the natural stone flooring to warm wood accents.”

The project is the first children’s ambulatory care center in North Texas to seek LEED certification.
