LOS ANGELES—DATE—Stanley L. Chiu, AIA, LEED® AP, an 18-year veteran architect largely known for his work in healthcare and higher education, has joined RTKL Associates Inc., a leading international architecture and planning firm, as a vice president. As RTKL’s Los Angeles Health + Science Studio leader, Chiu guides firm activities in the western United States and Asia markets.

Chiu is an award-winning designer and master planner whose work is regularly featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Modern Healthcare and Architectural Record. He is widely known for designing healthcare facilities using lean design principles, which maximize value and minimize waste in the built environment. Chiu’s use of lean design principles enhances the level of care provided at healthcare facilities by improving the flow of patients, materials and information.

Chiu joins an RTKL office that is in the midst of designing the 3.9-million-square-foot Shanghai Changzheng Pudong Hospital, the largest hospital ever built in one phase in China. The $413-million project is among several contributing to significant growth in RTKL’s healthcare practice.

“Stan’s significant experience in healthcare will be a strong contributor to the continued growth of our practice,” said Brad Barker, AIA, RTKL executive vice president in charge of the firm’s health-science practice. “We are pleased Stan joined RTKL and look forward to his design talent, innovative thinking and leadership contribution as RTKL continues to expand its West Coast presence.”

Prior to joining RTKL, he served as vice president in the Los Angeles office of HGA Architects and Engineers. He has designed a number of high-profile healthcare projects, including The Peter O. Kohler Pavilion at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, a recipient of the AIA National Healthcare Design Award in 2009; Sutter Health’s hospital prototype, which is now the model for a number of California projects; and the An Sinh Private General Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Chiu received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Wesleyan University in 1987 and a master’s degree in architecture from Harvard University in 1992.  He is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and serves on the Lean Construction Institute Advisory Committee. Chiu is a LEED® Accredited Professional (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a designation given to professionals who have demonstrated extensive knowledge in the principles of sustainable design.
