McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. Breaks Ground on Midland Memorial Hospital Expansion and Complete Renovation

Midland-Memorial-Hospital-239-400DALLAS — McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (www.mccarthy.com), one of the nation’s leading health care builders, recently broke ground on the renovation and expansion of Midland Memorial Hospital. The scope of this $100 -million project will include a new 240,000-square-foot, nine-story tower, as well as the renovation of an existing 100,000-square-foot hospital, upgrades to the central plant and a new five-level parking garage.

The new nine-story hospital tower will house dietary, emergency medicine and labor and delivery departments, as well as a new data center and patient rooms.  The renovation of the existing 100,000-square-foot hospital will consist of an expanded emergency department, CT scan rooms, patient rooms, a new pharmacy and a new cafeteria.  The new construction will replace existing patient rooms with 194 new patient beds.

The Midland Memorial Hospital addition will be constructed with a concrete frame.  The façade will consist of metal studs, an aluminum curtain wall, metal wall panels and an exterior insulation finish system (EIFS).  The interior of the new addition will have accents of stone and wood in the lobby entrance area and the patient rooms will have a mixture of vinyl tile and sheet goods used in the flooring.

Since the existing hospital will remain functional during the expansion and renovation process, the project will prove challenging as McCarthy works to minimize disruption to active hospital operations.  The addition will share a wall with the existing structure so McCarthy will take extensive infection control measures to ensure patient and staff safety.  McCarthy will also provide an alternate entrance for the emergency room.

Cory Edmondson, vice president of support services for Midland Memorial Hospital stated, “The importance of this project to our community is vital to our continued excellence in health care.  The complexity of this construction project will challenge us to work with staff, physicians and patients to ensure a safe environment and choosing McCarthy for construction management has proven to be a wise decision.”

“We are thrilled Midland Memorial has selected McCarthy to complete the renovation and build the new hospital addition,” said McCarthy’s Texas Division President Mike McWay. “We look forward to getting started on this significant healthcare project, helping Midland Memorial achieve its vision of a state-of-the-art hospital while continuously working to minimize disruption to current hospital operations.”

McCarthy is one of the most experienced builders of healthcare facilities in Texas.  In addition to the Midland Memorial Hospital expansion and renovation,  McCarthy’s roster of healthcare projects includes work for M.D. Anderson in Houston, United Regional Health Care Systems in Wichita Falls, the Carillon Point Plaza in Lubbock, as well as numerous renovation and expansion projects at the Knapp Medical Center in Welasco, including a $25 million hospital tower expansion, a $5.8-million addition and renovation project that included the addition of a 28,000-square-foot emergency department, and a $2.2-million renovation of 14,000 square feet of outpatient services.

The Midland Memorial Hospital project is scheduled for completion in September 2012.  The architect for this project is Perkins + Will and the owner’s representative is ADAMS Management Services Corporation.
