Health center 1 of 4 projects being paid for with hospital reserves
Construction is burgeoning at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, where four projects worth $43.7 million are either under way or soon to break ground.
The work is not as ambitious as what the board of directors envisioned before Measure W a $392 million bond proposal that would have essentially rebuilt the hospital fell short of the required two-thirds voter support last summer. Even so, Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue said the surviving projects are hefty enough to amount to a “local stimulus package.”
“If you’re paying attention to money that’s being sent anywhere from Washington,” Donohue said Monday in a news conference at the hospital, “[$43.7 million] is a lot more than the $1.3 million grant you may get, or bond opportunities, or loans up to $3 million.”
