As part of a joint venture team known as BARA, Balfour Beatty Construction was selected to manage construction of the Parkland Replacement Hospital for the Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, Texas. The 1.9 million-square-foot facility will replace the existing 55-year old hospital, and, when complete, will be the largest hospital building in Dallas. The $1.2 billion program will include a new, 862-bed Acute Care hospital, separate clinic building, office building, parking structures, and other support facilities. Two architectural firms, HDR Architecture, based in Omaha, Nebraska, and Corgan Associates of Dallas will design the project, which will be built to Silver LEED specifications. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2010 and complete in 2014. Said Walt Massey, Senior Vice President at Balfour Beatty, “For years, we’ve watched the amazing work being done by Parkland to help serve the residents of Dallas County. On behalf of the entire BARA team, we are thrilled to be able to give back, and to be a part of the next generation of Parkland.”

BARA is a joint venture formed to provide construction management services for the Parkland Replacement Hospital. BARA firms include Balfour Beatty Construction, Austin Commercial, H.J. Russell & Company, and Azteca Enterprises. BARA team members have managed 7.2 million square feet of healthcare construction in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, and have provided construction management services for some of the nation’s most well-recognized healthcare providers, including National Institutes of Health, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Duke University Medical Center.

On Parkland’s choice of design and joint venture teams, John Haupert, Parkland’s executive vice president and chief operating officer said, “These teams were chosen because they understand the importance of building a first-class hospital while remaining fiscally prudent and addressing Parkland’s unique needs, such as patient volume, our educational mission, and first and foremost our desire to be a patient- and family-centered hospital system.”
