Baylor College of Medicine Awarded $14.85 Million Grant to Complete Neurological Research Center

HOUSTON -- Neurological research at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and Texas Children's Hospital is getting a big boost in the form of a $14.85 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to complete two floors of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) at Texas Children's Hospital.

Johnson City Site of First Green Hospital in Tennessee

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Tennessee's first green hospital aims to heal patients and the environment at the same time.  Every aspect of the new Franklin Woods Community Hospital, located in 135-acre Med Tech Park in Johnson City, Tenn., was built with people and the natural world in mind.

Cork floors, wooden beams, and panoramic views of the nearby Smokey Mountains create a peaceful atmosphere inside.  Exterior design features such as an extensive underground system that funnels runoff water into retention ponds reduce the environmental impact.

Turner Breaks Ground on $161 Million South Patient Tower for INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va.

Patient Tower to Feature Green Building Elements for the Benefit of Patients and Staff

NEW YORK -- Turner Construction Company, the nation's largest builder of healthcare facilities, has broken ground on the $161 million South Patient Tower on the INOVA Fairfax Hospital campus in Falls Church, Va.  Construction is scheduled for completion in fall 2012.

The 216,000 sq. ft. tower will feature 174 private patient rooms for surgical and intensive care treatment.  The South Patient Tower is being designed and constructed to achieve a LEED Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council.  Green features of the expansion include a green roof, rain gardens, water cisterns, the use of low- and no-VOC paints, carpets and furniture and the installation of efficient energy and insulation systems.

Health Management Associates, Inc. Executes Definitive Agreement to Acquire the 406-Bed Wuesthoff Health System

NAPLES, Fla., -- Health Management Associates, Inc announced on July 27 that a subsidiary of Health Management has executed a definitive agreement to acquire the 406-bed Wuesthoff Health System ("Wuesthoff") and its associated ancillary facilities. The transaction is expected to be completed by October 1, 2010.

The Wuesthoff Health System is comprised of two hospitals, the 291-bed Wuesthoff Medical Center-Rockledge, located in Rockledge, Florida and the 115-bed Wuesthoff Medical Center-Melbourne, located in Melbourne, Florida, as well as other successful facilities providing a continuum of care.
