HKS Architects Completes Christiana Care Freestanding Emergency Department

Christiana Care HKS Architects RWILMINGTON, Del. – HKS, Inc. recently completed architecture and design services at the Christiana Care Middletown Campus Freestanding Emergency Department, bringing quality urgent healthcare services to the residents of Southern New Castle and Northern Kent counties in Delaware.

HKS Architects provided architecture, master planning, programming, interior design and sustainability consulting services for the freestanding emergency department. The 50,000-square-foot, two-story facility, with a 36,500-square-foot emergency department on the first floor, provides emergency services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is located on an 108-acre parcel of land for future expansion into a full hospital and medical campus.

This Christiana Care Freestanding Emergency Department acts as an intermediate emergency care facility that specializes in treating serious, but not life-threatening, medical emergencies. The facility contains six triage/supertrack rooms, 13 individual patient exam/treatment rooms, one major resuscitation room, eight clinical decision rooms, CT, ultrasound and general X-ray technology, as well as a full lab with 24,500 square feet of shell space above.

“We’re proud to have been a part of this project, helping to bring emergency medical services to residents in the Wilmington area, where access to emergency care has been limited in the past,” said Dan Luhrs, AIA, senior vice president and project manager in the HKS Atlanta office, which led this project. “We’ve seen a rise in the construction of freestanding emergency departments, as they may help to bridge the gap between acute care hospitals and outpatient clinics.”

General contractor was Bancroft Construction. The Christiana Care Middletown Campus is seeking LEED certification.
